NATO Jets Intercepts Russia's Planes

Conflict is starting to arise between NATO forces and the Russian military arms, as Wednesday it was reported that an aircraft was near the Latvian Airspace, when NATO jets intercepted the mission. Reports have been displaying that Russian planes are exercising military tactics similar to what they have down in the Cold War. It was done mostly to annoy the ally troops. The Estonian Radar detected activity in the Baltic Sea. When NATO jets were sent to identify the planes, the planes quickly flew into their Russian airspace. The number of planes is still unknown, but the fleets near the area were put on alert. The Russian President, Vladimir Putin, still continues to annex territories, such as the Crimea and consider it a "reunification" of Russia (USSR).

Germanwings Plane Crashes

Lufthansa, the company that owns the Germanwings airlines, is dumbfounded from the evidence that supports the theory that the plane that just crashed (Flight 9525), which killed all 150 people on board, was, in fact, intently done by the co-pilot on the plane. The 28-year-old German national, Andreas Lubitz, apparently wanted to "destroy the aircraft," officials stated. Evidence gathered from the black box kept on board portrays Lubriz actions were strange. Authorities are claiming that he "took advantage of the moment," when the pilot left to use the bathroom. It is unclear whether the pilot was restricted from entering the cockpit again because Lubriz either placed a lock on the lever or switched the code. The reports show that Lubriz was a hundred percent certified to fly a plane, and his physiological tests are clear. Nonetheless, there is no real reason for why the Lubriz did crash the plane. It was also reported that Lubriz had zero activity  connections with any religions, and authorities are not considering it a "terrorist act."

The plane was cruising at a altitude of 38,000 feet, and then dropped about eight minutes. Then the plane lost contact with the French radar at about 6,000 feet right before it crashed into the mountains near France and Italian borders. The victims of the crash were all said to be from 18 different countries. Residents by the crash site in the Alps Mountains, have opened up their homes to mourners day and night. Further investigation will be continued, as the FBI and other agencies get involved to solve the mysterious reasoning for the plane crashing.

Massacre In Sweden

Last Thursday, a gunman opened fire on civilians in a pub in the western city of Gothenburg, Sweden. At least ten people were injured and two were reported dead over this incident. Public officials believe the shooting to be a massacre and an action of terrorism. The suspects for the incident are a part of the local gangs in the town. Witnesses claim that the gunman fled the scene, and police forces could not detain him. No arrests have been made. Ambulances from near-by hospitals were called to the restaurant, and carried many injured people away on stretchers. Some wounds were fatal, and the body count continues to increase. Authorities are still searching for the gunman, and there is an intense investigation over the reasoning for the massacre too.

Cliff Collapses and Kills 1 Hiker

Fissure on the Bear Valley Trail
In California on the Bear Valley Trail, two hikers were enjoying their walk and the beautiful weather, when the cliff they were scoping gave out. One was left dead, and the other is allegedly reported to be in critical condition, suffering from serious injuries. The hiker had to be airlifted to the Santa Monica Memorial Hospital. The U.S. National Guard reported to have set up warning signs at the beginning of the trails due to the fissure spotted on top of the overlook. When the cliff ridge gave out, the hikers were on the edge of Arch Rock on the Point Reyes National Park Seashore, and fell sixty feet down. The names of the victims are yet to be given out to the public.

Frankie the Dog: A Man's Bestfriend and Savor

Can dogs be the next advancement in the medical field to detecting patients for cancer? It is widely proven fact that dogs sense of smell is tens of thousands of a human being ability to smell. Dogs can detect odors parts per trillion. Dogs have smell receptors in their brain, it possess up to 300 million of them. This 40 times greater than that of human brain (we only have 6 million receptors).

Inside structure of a dog.
There is always stories on the news about a heroic dog that became a saving grace when it found either a little girl trapped under concrete, or a skier buried under snow during a natural disaster (avalanche, earthquake, tsunami, etc.) Have you ever heard of a dog that can smell the odor of diseases such as cancer on a human? According BBC, a dog name Frankie saved his owner after he smelt the thyroid cancer. Frankie is a German shepherd that was trained to lay down when if he smelt the cancer in a urine sample. If it is clean he was taught to turn away. Scientists are still trying to classify what exactly Frankie smells. Out of the 34 cases Frankie was tested with, 30 he had the correct diagnosis. Two were given false positives, and two were diagnosed already, but Frankie did not smell it. Scientists are hoping to train the dogs to detect things outside of cancer like dangerous infections.

3,000 Skeletons Found in Historical Site

A skull and some body parts of a adult.
Archaeologists have discovered about 3,000 skeletons that date back to the early 16th century and into the 17th century. In London, England this historical site is called the Bedlam or New Churchyard. Over 2,000 Londoners were documented to be buried in this area for religion purposes. Some of the bodies are believed to be victims of the Civil War, the Great Plague of 1665, and the Great Fire of London in 1666. This graveyard was discovered by workers in the process of making the city of Liverpool railroad systems longer. The project to expand is going to cost $22 billion to complete. It will also be postponed as these archaeologists continue to examine the skeletons. The goal is to get a clearer understanding of the diseases that took the lives of victims during the eras. One possibility they hope to discover, is the DNA of the bacteria that suddenly evolved and the plague stopped. Another discovery was a road from the Roman Empire that produced artifacts like horseshoes and cremation urns. By September, the project should continue to expand the railroad systems.

11 Dead From Helicopter Crash

Allegedly, on Tuesday night, a UH-16 Black Hawk helicopter crash landed into the ocean off of the coast of Florida's Panhandle. It was reported missing Wednesday, and due to fog advisory, limited search parties were sent out. A total of eleven men were on the helicopter; seven marines and four soldiers. Their names were not released to the press. The men were on a Eglin Air Force Base in Florida, and crashed during a "routine training mission involving the Marine Special Operations Regiment." Another helicopter involved in the training exercise reported to return safely to base, although they were assigned a different area to train in.

By Wednesday night, sixty search parties were on the waters between the barrier island and the mainland. The fog was still heavy and prevented the use of air crafts. Eventually, the Coast Guard recovered pieces from the helicopter's tail rotor. Reports of an unknown amount of human remains washing up on the shore are being broadcasted. The cause of the crash is still unknown; many believe it is because of the fog. There is still an undergoing investigation to find the cause of the death of these eleven men. Their families have been informed and the military is doing their best to give them the care they need.

Eldred Varisty Boys' Basketball Semifinal Game

Eldred Varsity boys' basketball team has traveled down a memorable path this season. From terrible weather and the cancellation of practices and games to injuries of their players to qualifying for the Sections game, it has been a long season. The Varsity team will only be losing three players next year, Nick Wyss, Dominic Roselli, and Emerson Heasman, three seniors who both played their hearts out this year. The team mostly consisted of six juniors, Andrew Halloran, Dylan Wolff, David Powers, Noah Clemmons, Jonathan Santoro, and Tyler Starke. There was only one sophomore, Sebastian Schadt, who stepped up his game when the starting point guard was unable to attend a couple games in the beginning of the season.

On Monday, March 2, Eldred Varsity boys had to battle against Chapel Field another Class D school, to see who would qualify for the Sections game on Wednesday, March 4. At 6 o'clock, the starters, David, Noah, Dylan, Nick and Dominic, were announced. The chant "I Believe We Will Win," was started by one of the students in the Bee hive. The bleachers, was full of students all wearing black or green and gold, and in a couple areas there was students from all around the area to come and watch. It was not long until the Eldred boys took lead of the game, by the first half of the game we were ahead by 15 points.

Chapel did start to make a comeback in the beginning of the third half, so Eldred's Bee Hive responded by chanting and screaming louder. Various cheers like "Let's Go Eldred," and "ECS," broke out! The gym was echoing and rumbling with the excitement of the audience and then the Eldred Varsity boys. The five players on the court stepped up their defense game, and barely let Chapel Field touch the ball. Nick Wyss was dropping threes every two minutes and finished the night with 26 total points, David Powers had 21 points, and point guard Noah Clemmons, had 14 points. When the clock had less than a minute left, the scoreboard read 68-59. The buzzer went off and the bee hive went insane. Some students flooded the court. The Eldred boys had truly pulled it off.

Wednesday's game against Manor did not have such an intense ending as Monday's game. They lost 61-30, and finished the season with a 7-14-0 record. Next year, the team will be returning all of their starters, but one, and most their team.
